DIY LED NEON Pixel Mapped Tubes

-- How does technology inspire you? --

I've always believed that the art we create, especially if powered by technology, should reflect our humanity and creativity. That's why I am beginning to work on a lighting and dance project that I call AI to REALITY. It's not just about imitating what we see online, but breathing life into it. The concept comes from my ability to look at an AI generated photo and say: Oh, I can create that! I'll be building a total of 8 of these 5' tall led neon tubes with my WS2812 pixel strips.

LED Wall Interactive Art

November 2023

This is my first interactive art design using an LED Video Wall that I created using WS2812 pixel mappable lights. To make the interactive content, I created a color texture in Touchdesigner through a GLSL comp node with a couple lines of code. The color splat is referenced to parameters of midi data from the mouse position and force/ acceleration. I then used NDI to output into my pixel mapping software ELM to control the lights.

Touch Designer Integration

August 2023

I am starting to use touch designer to integrate audio reactive gpu particles to a video input. I'm looking to create interactive dance media that can be controlled by both the dancer in motion via midi data as well as the audio. These GPU particle nodes will work perfectly for my pixel mapped lights because of the fact that it is not resolution dependent. The transfer of color and light will follow the dancer wonderfully.

We combined new pixel mapping technologies that are currently the cutting edge of lighting design, with the aesthetic that most wedding clients are looking for: a mini-light canopy.

What is Pixel Mapping?

Pixel mapping is a technique used in event production and stage lighting design that involves programming LED lights to display specific colors and patterns in a coordinated manner, creating an immersive visual experience for the audience.

Pixel mapping involves assigning individual pixels (or groups of pixels) within a LED light fixture to correspond to specific areas or elements of an image or video. This can be achieved through specialized software and hardware, such as DMX controllers and pixel mapping software.

By utilizing pixel mapping, event organizers and lighting designers can create dynamic and captivating visual displays that can enhance the overall atmosphere and mood of an event. It can also be used to create customized branding and messaging through visual elements, or to create immersive environments for themed events.

For example, at a music concert, pixel mapping can be used to create dynamic visual effects that are synchronized with the music, enhancing the audience's emotional response to the performance. At a corporate event, pixel mapping can be used to project customized branding and messaging that is consistent with the company's message and values.

Our seamless and beautiful mini-light canopy will be sure to captivate your special night!

Power & Data Distribution:

Our power supply integrates 8 different 5Amp power outputs to provide consistent power throughout your entire canopy. That's up to 2000 feet of continuous mini-light strands! Each pixel contains 3 LED's, so to gain control of the entire canopy, we use professional-grade data distribution through this 16 universe controller. We can run 600' of strands from this one box which is waterproofed and can conceal well behind drape.

Product Design & Testing:

We built the power supply and data distribution, and tested a few different types of connectors and cables to be sure that we were not only safe in the wiring, but secure. We then tested mini-light strands from different brands to decide on which brand of mini-light provides the best color for an RGB pixel with the best power consumption and spacing. The key is to maximize the length of the strand, but we also want to provide a good pixel resolution. Through these tests, we were able to determine the best way to achieve the effect we wanted.

Scalability & Format:

The versatility of the data distribution and power box that we've built allow room to link more power and data distro boxes as needed to add more lights! Every 600" would require another supply and data box which are easily linkable, so there is no limit to how large of a canopy we can control!

Even further, our data controller and power supply works with virtually any type of LED tape, LED strip, LED Neon, or LED pixel! So look out for more interesting designs that involve other types of pixels as well! This is only the beginning of the types of customized, pixel mapped chandeliers and designs that we can build and program.
